Mr Dino Melaye has dumped the Peoples democratic Party (PDP) for the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) because of the failure of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party to organize a rerun for the Kabba/Bunu/Ijumu Federal Constituency of Kogi State.
Melaye announced at the weekend that he had left the PDP for good and would be flying the banner of the ANPP in the forthcoming National Assembly election in April.
“They know that if the rerun is conducted, Melaye will win hands down, so the best way was to stop the panel from conducting the rerun and they refused to release materials for the rerun, but every other rerun in the state was allowed to take place.
“So, I feel that there is nothing I should be doing in a party like that where few people will seat down and revert decisions. “It’s so unfortunate that this is going to affect the fortune of the PDP in Kogi State, because there is exodus of people from the PDP in Kogi and I am sure that is the same all across the state.” Melaye, who had been having a running battle with the leadership of the House of Representatives, specifically, he accused the Speaker, Dimeji Bankole of working behind the scene to scuttle his ambition.
He stated that he protested against the invalidation of six votes which made him to lose the first rerun and the NWC approved a rerun, which however could not hold because of the steps taken by Bankole. “The panel recommended that if my six invalid votes will not be counted, there should be a rerun election by the National Working Committee of the PDP, but to my dismay, the NWC is yet to seat on the matter to undo the decision.
“I went to Kogi for the rerun, but to my dismay, I was told that Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole went to the Aso Rock Villa and other places and told all sorts of satanic lies, including the one that when Atiku Abubakar came to meet members of the House before the presidential primaries that I raised Atiku’s hand up and that I said the real man has arrived.”
Melaye denied ever raising Atiku’s hand, adding that it was deliberate lies by Bankole in connivance with some functionaries in Kogi State to deny him the ticket to run on the ticket of the PDP.
Responding to Melaye’s allegations against Bankole, Chief Press Secretary to the speaker, Idowu Bakare, described it laughable that the speaker was being blamed for the failure of one man to convince his constituents on the need to return him to the parliament.
