The Plateau Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) has made a significant breakthrough in combating railway vandalism with the arrest of seven suspects in the state.
According to Alexander Barunde, the Commandant of the NSCDC in Plateau State, the suspects were apprehended at Kwakwi community in Riyom Local Government Area following a tip-off from vigilant members of the community.
Barunde disclosed that the suspects were in possession of sixty pieces of railway tracks, thirty slippers, and various other materials intended for vandalism. These items were found loaded onto two trucks, bound for an undisclosed destination.
"The suspects will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded," Barunde stated.
Among the apprehended individuals, Ahmed Mohammed claimed innocence, stating that they were merely contracted to transport the items without knowledge of their illicit origin.
The NSCDC's successful operation underscores its commitment to curbing criminal activities such as railway vandalism, which not only pose a threat to public safety but also disrupt vital infrastructural networks essential for transportation and economic activities in the region.
Efforts to combat such criminal acts rely heavily on community vigilance and collaboration with law enforcement agencies, as demonstrated by the timely intervention of members of the Kwakwi community leading to the apprehension of the suspects.
