In a tragic incident, a driver identified as Daniel has been apprehended by homicide detectives from the Lagos State Police Command for his involvement in a fatal accident that claimed the life of a 5-year-old girl named Fatima. The accident occurred at Adura Field in the Ijaye Ojokoro area of the state.
According to reports, the unfortunate incident took place on Thursday, March 28, 2024, around 2 pm. Daniel, who was driving a Toyota Camry with registration number FST 843 GY, was reportedly reversing at Adura Field when he unknowingly struck and ran over the young victim.
Fatima was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was tragically pronounced dead by the attending doctor.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Lagos State Police Command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, expressed condolences to the bereaved family. He disclosed that upon receiving information about the accident, the police promptly responded and took the driver into custody for further investigation.
"The family was granted access to the corpse at their request for burial in accordance with Islamic rites," Hundeyin stated.
He added, "Preliminary information suggests that the driver was reversing when he knocked down the girl. The corpse of the little girl was released to her family for burial according to the Islamic injunction, while the suspect and the vehicle are in police custody for investigation."
The tragic incident serves as a grim reminder of the importance of road safety and the need for heightened vigilance while operating vehicles, especially in areas frequented by pedestrians, particularly children.
