A 35-year-old motorcyclist, James Sunday, finds himself in police custody following accusations of murdering his wife's friend, Justinah Sunday, aged 42, in a grim incident that has sent shockwaves through Ondo State.
The order for remand was handed down by Chief Magistrate T. O. Olusola-Olujobi at a Magistrate Court session held in Akure, the state capital.
According to the Police Prosecutor, Taiwo Oniyere, the defendant stands accused of unlawfully killing Justinah on Sunday, March 13, 2024, at No. 47, Ijoka Street, Ondo, within the Ondo State Magisterial District.
Oniyere detailed the allegations, stating that James Sunday purportedly strangled the victim with a rope, leading to her untimely demise. The prosecutor cited violations of Sections 316 and 319 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 37, Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.
The tragic turn of events allegedly stemmed from a business transaction gone awry, with the deceased reportedly commissioning James to deliver cow meat worth N250,000 to a customer. However, the accused purportedly diverted the meat to his own residence, triggering a series of threats and ultimately leading to the fatal outcome.
In defense, James Sunday maintained that he had known the deceased for over nine years but claimed to have had no contact with her since she separated from his wife and relocated to Ondo.
While the prosecution urged remand pending advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions, the defense counsel, A.F. Falana, sought time to respond to the remand application.
Chief Magistrate Olusola-Olujobi acceded to the request, ordering the remand of the defendant in police custody. The case has been adjourned until April 18, 2024, for further proceedings and ruling.
