On Friday, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) intensified its crackdown on illegal drug activities by sealing three shops in the Kpaduma Community 2, Asokoro District, and Nyanya Motor Park within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

This enforcement action follows Thursday's raids on drug hawkers at the Area 1 and Dei-Dei motor parks, where 19 drug hawkers and shop owners were apprehended. These individuals are currently under investigation at NAFDAC's head office in Abuja.

Mr. Umar Ahmed, the Assistant Chief Regulatory Officer of the Investigation and Enforcement Unit, Federal Task Force, NAFDAC, stated that the operations are part of a broader effort to cleanse the market of counterfeit and unwholesome drugs. He emphasized that the proliferation of drug hawkers in the FCT necessitated urgent enforcement actions.

"The activities of drug hawkers have become rampant in the FCT, and it is essential for NAFDAC to step in to curb these unwholesome practices," Ahmed said. He added that the nationwide raids are in response to complaints from stakeholders, including the Department of State Services (DSS).

Ahmed detailed the recent operations, saying, "We have raided no fewer than 55 hawkers’ outlets in Kpaduma and Nyanya. While some hawkers managed to escape, we successfully arrested nine individuals today and eleven on Thursday."

The seized products, including those abandoned by fleeing hawkers, are now in NAFDAC's custody, with an estimated value of about N58 million for Friday’s haul and N70 million for Thursday’s. These seizures predominantly consist of expensive, hard-to-find drugs, including aphrodisiacs, analgesics, tramadol, and controlled substances like cocodamol.

NAFDAC’s ongoing enforcement operations aim to dismantle the network of illegal drug hawkers and ensure that only safe, approved medications are available to the public.
