Tensions rise as conflicting narratives emerge following the death of Chukwudi Okereke Abraham, a motor mechanic, while in custody at the Octopus Strike Force Unit of the Rivers State Police. The deceased's family alleges torture, while the police claim he was involved in criminal activities.
According to the Rivers State Police Command, Chukwudi Okereke Abraham was implicated in a case involving kidnapping, armed robbery, and cultism. The police spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, disclosed that the deceased was allegedly involved in the abduction of a businesswoman in the Diobu area of Port Harcourt in 2023, where the victim was held captive for a week and released after a ransom of ₦3.5 million was paid.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Iringe-Koko stated, "Investigations revealed that the deceased was a member of the Dey-Gbam secret cult gang." The police maintain that Chukwudi was not tortured and emphasize their commitment to a transparent investigation.
Contrary to the police's narrative, Abraham Okereke, the father of the deceased, recounted a harrowing tale of his son's arrest and subsequent disappearance. He alleged that Chukwudi was arbitrarily detained, denied access to legal representation, and ultimately found dead without proper explanation.
The Chairman of the State Civil Society Organisation, Enefaa Georgewill, criticized the police's handling of the case, citing a lack of transparency and accountability. Georgewill called for a thorough investigation into Chukwudi's death and demanded the prosecution of all responsible parties.
The deceased's family and civil society organizations are demanding an autopsy to determine the cause of death and accountability for the actions of law enforcement officers. As tensions escalate, the public awaits further developments in this contentious case.
