In a tragic turn of events, a teacher from Nyamira Boys High School in Kenya has reportedly ended his own life following significant losses from online casino betting. Kelvin Omwenga was found deceased in his rented house on Wednesday night, June 5, 2024.
Nyamira Township Assistant Chief, Johnson Manyara, disclosed that Omwenga had lost approximately Sh50,000 in the online betting activities. "I was informed by locals about a teacher who had ended his life," stated Manyara. "I proceeded to his house and notified police officers who arrived and took the body away."
Omwenga's wife had recently given birth but was away visiting family when the tragic incident occurred. According to Manyara, Omwenga had urged his wife to travel home after learning of his parents' illness.
The news of Omwenga's death has shocked the school community, with Nyamira Boys principal George Onkundi expressing deep sorrow over the loss. Onkundi revealed that Omwenga, who taught mathematics and chemistry, had been a dedicated member of the school faculty for four years.
"He did not exhibit signs of mental stress but had talked of domestic matters bothering him. He would often get financial help from teachers," Onkundi added.
Another teacher, who chose to remain anonymous, shared insights into Omwenga's financial struggles. "Omwenga recently took a loan from me. He shared a plan on how the money would be repaid in small bits until everything was settled," the colleague disclosed.
While Omwenga's death has deeply saddened those who knew him, investigations into the circumstances surrounding his passing are ongoing. The incident serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges individuals face, particularly in the realm of online gambling, and underscores the need for increased awareness and support for mental health issues within communities.
