The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has initiated legal proceedings against three individuals before the Ikeja Special Offences Court on allegations of embezzling ₦3.5 billion from Access Bank.

According to reports from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the defendants, identified as Michael Igbomins, David Onyeike, and Moses Iruolaje, faced charges of stealing and retaining proceeds of crime.

During the arraignment, the defendants, whose residential details remain undisclosed, entered pleas of not guilty.

EFCC Counsel, Abdulhamid Tukur, requested a trial date from the court and urged for the defendants to be remanded in a correctional facility.

While the defence counsel acknowledged the absence of pending applications, they assured the court of addressing necessary proceedings before the next adjourned date.

The prosecutor informed the court that the alleged offences occurred in Lagos in 2023. It was alleged that the defendants unlawfully appropriated and utilized ₦3.5 billion belonging to Access Bank for their personal gain.

The EFCC further asserted that the defendants knowingly retained the ill-gotten proceeds from their criminal activities.

The charges leveled against the defendants contravene Section 17 of the EFCC Establishment Act, 2004, and Section 280 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015.

In response, Justice Olubunmi Abike-Fadipe ordered the remand of the defendants in Ikoyi Custodial Centre pending the determination of their bail application. The case was adjourned until Nov. 28 for the commencement of trial.
