Pastor Idowu Iluyomade, formerly the senior pastor of the City of David Parish, Region 20 of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), has officially resigned from his pastoral role within the church.
Up until last week, Iluyomade led the thriving City of David Parish. However, he was recently transferred by the church leadership to the Throne of Grace Parish in Ebute Metta, Lagos, which serves as the mission's headquarters. He was slated to serve there as the Pastor-in-Charge of Elders.
Pastor Charles Kpandei, the former Pastor-in-Charge of RCCG Resurrection Parish in Region 11, has been assigned to take over from Iluyomade at the City of David Parish. Notably, Kpandei had preached at the combined Service of Songs for the late Herbert Wigwe at the Resurrection Parish in Lekki, Lagos, on March 7, 2024.
The transfer reportedly did not sit well with Iluyomade and his wife, Siju. Both were noticeably absent during the church service when the transfer was announced, leading to Iluyomade's decision to resign from the RCCG. He submitted his resignation on Tuesday, June 4, 2024.
Sources suggest that Iluyomade’s transfer might be linked to the extravagant 60th birthday party his wife hosted on February 18, 2024. The lavish celebration took place at Eko Hotels & Suites in Lagos, featuring highlife singer Chinedu Okoli, known as Flavour, among other entertainers. High-profile guests included Tony Elumelu, chairman of United Bank for Africa (UBA); Nneka Onyeali Ikpe, managing director of Fidelity Bank; and Oba Ghandi Olaoye, the Soun of Ogbomoso and a former RCCG pastor.
The opulent birthday celebration drew criticism from many Nigerians who viewed it as insensitive, especially coming so soon after the tragic death of Herbert Wigwe, founding CEO of Access Holdings Plc, along with his wife Chizoba and their son in a helicopter crash in the U.S. on February 9. Wigwe was a prominent member and financier of the RCCG.
The departure of Pastor Iluyomade marks a significant shift within the RCCG community, highlighting ongoing discussions about leadership and community sensitivities.
