A five-story building under construction collapsed early Wednesday morning in Onitsha, Anambra State, causing widespread concern and drawing attention to construction safety standards in the area.
The building, located at DMGS Junction near the well-known Dennis Memorial Grammar School, collapsed around 7:15 a.m. Eyewitnesses described the structure coming down in a heap of rubble.
"I was going to work this morning when I saw it. The entire building came down in rubble," a witness reported.
As of now, there are no confirmed reports of casualties. Sources indicate that construction work had not started for the day, suggesting that no workers were present at the time of the collapse.
"The cause of the collapse has not been ascertained, but many bystanders who watched from across the road suspected that it may be as a result of the use of substandard materials," said a bystander.
Authorities are expected to investigate the incident to determine the exact cause and to ensure such occurrences are prevented in the future.
