The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has reported that a suspected Nigerian drug dealer assaulted one of its officers during an operation in Randburg, located north of South Africa's largest city. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon as officers followed a lead on the suspect.

Upon arrival at the scene, the suspect called for reinforcements, claiming he was being robbed. This prompted a violent confrontation in which one of the officers was attacked. In the ensuing chaos, two suspects were shot. One sustained critical injuries and was transported to Olivedale Hospital, while the other suffered a hand wound, was treated at the scene, and subsequently arrested.

A third suspect, who transported the critically injured individual to the hospital, was also identified and apprehended by the officers. During the incident, the officer’s firearm was recovered by the Douglasdale SAPS, and a police vehicle sustained damage.

Lesiba Thobakgale, spokesperson for the South African Policing Union (SAPU), condemned the attack, stating that an assault on the police constitutes an assault on the state. "Police killings or attacks should be declared treason as it is a crime against the state, and the state has a responsibility to protect police officers who are representing the state and not themselves," Thobakgale asserted. "This action will show that the government is taking such barbaric acts seriously."

JMPD confirmed that a case of attempted murder and public violence has been opened and is currently under investigation.
