The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has made significant interceptions and arrests across Nigeria, including the seizure of a massive codeine shipment valued at over N7.35 billion.
The NDLEA intercepted 6,125 cartons of codeine syrup, containing a total of 1,050,000 bottles, at the Port Harcourt Ports Complex in Onne, Rivers State. The shipment, weighing 157,500 kilograms, was discovered in six containers on Saturday.
This major haul is the third of its kind in the past four weeks, thanks to credible intelligence and meticulous tracking of the consignments from their port of departure. A special operations unit of the NDLEA collaborated with the Port Harcourt Ports Command and other security agencies, including the Customs Service, for a thorough examination of the containers.
Femi Babafemi, NDLEA’s Director of Media and Advocacy, announced the successful operation on Sunday, highlighting the ongoing efforts to curb the influx of illicit substances into the country.
In another development, NDLEA officers at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Ikeja, Lagos, arrested two passengers on a Qatar Airways flight bound for Doha. The suspects, Aikhomoun Daniel (alias Oladapo Olanrewaju) and Ayigoro Waheed Omobolaji, tested positive for ingesting illicit substances during screening on Friday, June 21.
Babafemi revealed that Daniel excreted 90 wraps of cocaine weighing 1.022 kilograms in six excretions, while Ayigoro discharged 60 wraps weighing 662 grams in five excretions. Further investigation uncovered that Daniel had stolen the identity of his late uncle, who was based in Germany, to obtain a Schengen visa and facilitate his travel to Europe. His real name was confirmed to be Oladapo Olanrewaju.
These operations underscore the NDLEA's commitment to combating drug trafficking and ensuring the safety and well-being of Nigerian citizens.
