A Nigerian couple, Agbakoba John Mmadu and Agbakoba Ijeoma Chinwe, allegedly leading a high-profile cocaine syndicate in Lagos, have been arrested by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
The arrest, which also included their associate Okoye Ifeoma Maryjane, occurred during a raid that uncovered significant consignments of cocaine intended for both export and local distribution.
Femi Babafemi, the NDLEA's Director of Media and Advocacy, announced on Sunday that the agency's special operations unit carried out the raid after months of intelligence gathering and surveillance. The syndicate is notorious for packaging, distributing, and trafficking cocaine within Nigeria and internationally.
Babafemi stated, "The 54-year-old Agbakoba John Mmadu was arrested at Ago Palace Way, Okota, while his wife, Agbakoba Ijeoma Chinwe, 39, and associate, Okoye Ifeoma Maryjane, 31, who also acted as their stash keeper, were apprehended at Plot 2205 Eugene Ndubisi Close, Lilly Estate, Amuwo Odofin area of Lagos, all on Wednesday, July 3, 2024.
"During the raid, seven parcels of cocaine weighing a total of 7.652 kilograms were recovered from Mmadu at Ago Palace Way. Additionally, 122 compressed pellets of cocaine weighing 2.42 kilograms were seized from Ijeoma and Ifeoma at Lilly Estate, bringing the total seizure to 10.1 kilograms, valued at over N2.1 billion in street value."
The arrests mark a significant blow to the syndicate's operations, as the NDLEA continues its crackdown on drug trafficking in the region.
