German police thwarted a suspected ISIS terror attack just hours before the Euro 2024 final between England and Spain last Sunday.
Thousands of fans from both countries had gathered at the fan zone in Berlin’s Breitscheidplatz to watch the game. The potential threat came amid previous ISIS warnings to target the quarter-finals of this season’s Champions League.
In response to the heightened risk, both tournament organizers and German security forces intensified their policing efforts throughout the Euros. According to reports by The Sun, police conducted raids at various addresses in Potsdam, a city near Berlin, after fears of an imminent attack on the England fan zone surfaced.
The raids targeted five men known to be ISIS supporters, who were already under surveillance by German police. Three of the suspects have been released under investigation, while the other two remain under scrutiny.
In a statement, German police confirmed the raids: “The homes of three men were searched at three addresses in Potsdam. Forces from the special task forces were involved in the operation. The measures were carried out in connection with an immediate threat from the Islamist spectrum.”
Despite the threat, the Euro 2024 final proceeded without incident, with Spain claiming their first major trophy in 12 years by defeating England 2-1.
