One person was burnt in a fire outbreak that occurred on Monday evening at Ojuelegba Road, Dalemo Alakuko Lagos.

It was gathered that the fire which started around 5:45 pm burnt eight shops to ashes as shop owners counted losses.

The street is a boundary between Lagos and Ogun State as the shops are located behind the popular Yusuf Estate, which belongs to Lagos State.

Our correspondent who was at the scene of the inferno reported that the fire had destroyed a lot of goods worth millions of naira.

The owner of the paint shop where the fire originated, Mrs Fola Gorilla, explained that the fire was caused by a chemical reaction in the shop.

She said: “We had finished the production. We were about to turn the paint into the small containers for sale when a fire broke out in the paint. Our production manager was caught up in the fire.

“In fact, I have lost more than N5 million because we just stocked our store with raw materials.

Some of the other shop owners lamented the millions of naira lost to the inferno.

One of the shop owners adjacent to the Paint Shop whose shop was also totally consumed by fire, complained that the Paint Producer had no Fire Extinguisher in her shop.

He added that they did not even know the pair was being produced in the shop.

Also speaking, the Divisional Officer of So-Safe Corps, Ogun State Community Social Orientation and Safety Corps, Akera Dalemo Division, Adele Ramon Adisa, said the fire outbreak was sudden and could not be curtailed before escalating.

“When the fire broke out, nobody was on the ground to rescue the situation until it escalated. The chemicals used for the production of the paint caught fire. There were gas and generators in the adjacent shops which also caught fire.

“Before the man working in the paint shop could be rescued, he had already been caught up in the fire. We thank God that he was alive as he rushed to the hospital. As we are talking now, he is in the hospital.

Meanwhile, the So-Safe Corps boss said there is another person building a new Gas Plant in the street, which is very close to where people are living.

He urged the Local Governments involved to take precautionary action to forestall another fore outbreak that could lead to mass loss of lives.

“The landlords in this area seem not to be taking any action now. We are urging the local governments to come in. The proposed Gas Plant is situated in between houses. It is very close to our own office here. Three local governments share here, we have Ojokoro LCDA, Ado-Odo Ora LG, and Ifo LG. They should take action to stop such projects to save lives.”

It took the help of the firefighters from Ile-Epo Oke-Odo, Lagos State to quench the fire.
