No fewer than eight persons died yesterday in an early morning accident along Ife-Ondo Road in Osun State. The incident, which occurred at Aye-Oba village, in Ife South Local Government Area of the state, involved a car and an 18-passenger bus, marked AG 222 FFE.

Eyewitnesses met at the scene of the incident told Daily Sun that the three passengers in front of the bus died on the spot while two out six passengers inside the car gave up the ghost. The 18-seater bus was owned and driven by a businesswoman who is electronics dealer.

The businesswoman, popularly called Iya Pupa, who was one of the three passengers who died instantly in the accident, was said to be a popular figure at markets across Ife South Local Government Area of the state as she used the bus to convey her goods from one market to the other.

Eyewitnesses, however, blamed her for causing the accident because she overtook another vehicle at a sharp bend leading to a head-on collision with another car. One of the two mobile police officers met at the scene of the accident told Daily Sun that the accident occurred around 9’o’clock in the morning and confirmed that the 18-seater bus actually caused the accident.

“We were behind them when it happened. The bus overtook another vehicle but later ran into another car coming in the opposite direction. The car was coming from Ile-Ife axis of the road, while the bus was coming from Ondo end of the road,” the police officer stated.

Daily Sun gathered from sympathizers at the scene that the policemen were in the convoy of the immediate past governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, who was the first to get to the accident scene.
When Daily Sun visited the scene of the accident, rescuers were seeing using axe to disengage the mangled and lifeless body of the car driver from the wreckage of the car.
