In a shocking turn of events, former Delta State Commissioner for Technical Education, Evang. Joan Onyemaechi Mrakpor, also known as Ada Anioma, was discovered dead and abandoned at the River Niger bank in Onitsha, Anambra State. The 58-year-old victim was brutally murdered by a six-man gang of kidnappers.
Mrakpor, who was the wife of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Mr. Peter Mrakpor, and a former legislator representing Aniocha/Oshimili Federal constituency, was found naked and severely injured around 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. This discovery came three days after her abduction from her church located on Delta Broadcasting Service (DBS) road in Asaba.
The kidnappers, who did not demand ransom or communicate with the victim’s family, transported Mrakpor by speed boat along the River Niger from Otu-Ogwu road in Asaba. They set her car on fire to eliminate any evidence. Her body showed signs of severe torture, including heavy bruising, indicating that she was flogged and mistreated before her death.
The abduction, which occurred around 4:30 p.m. three days prior, resulted in the immediate death of her two police orderlies, who were shot on the spot by the kidnappers.
Joan Mrakpor, a prominent figure in Delta State politics, previously served as a member of the House of Representatives and as a lawmaker in the Delta State House of Assembly between 2007 and 2015. Her murder has left the community in shock and mourning.
