The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has announced the demobilization of 54 corps members who were wrongly mobilized by the University of Calabar, as part of its ongoing efforts to ensure that only qualified graduates are issued the national service certificate.
Brigadier General YD Ahmed, the NYSC Director-General, made this disclosure during a press briefing in Abuja on Saturday. He stated that legal action would be taken against those responsible for the erroneous mobilization.
In addition to the 54 demobilized corps members, 19 others who had registered online for mobilization have been barred from participating in the service. The NYSC also withheld four Certificates of National Service from other offenders, bringing the total number of voided certificates to 178.
General Ahmed praised the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Florence Obi, for her transparency in reporting the mobilization of unqualified graduates from her institution. He noted that this proactive step by the Vice-Chancellor underscores the importance of integrity in the NYSC’s mobilization process.
"The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar came here to report that she observed some names on the institution’s list that should not have been there. I commend her for this transparency. In the past, we even had a case where a bread seller was mobilized from the same institution due to fraudulent practices," General Ahmed said.
The NYSC Director-General emphasized that the organization is committed to thoroughly reviewing and improving its mobilization procedures. He also stressed the importance of collaboration with Heads of Corps Producing Institutions and other stakeholders across the country to address this issue effectively.
General Ahmed concluded by urging all employers in the country to verify the authenticity of the certificates of national service presented by job applicants, reinforcing the NYSC’s dedication to maintaining the integrity of the national service program.
