Operatives of the Inspector General of Police Response Team (IRT) from the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Force Headquarters Annex in Ikoyi, Lagos, have successfully apprehended a four-man robbery gang in Ikorodu. The suspects were allegedly involved in the violent theft of a Toyota Sienna and an iPhone 12 from victims in the Gbaga area of Ikorodu town.
The suspects, identified as Ishola Obaro Sunday, 24; Samuel Junior, 21; Idris Akeem, 21; and Mudashiru Jelili, 21, were arrested following a swift operation by the police. The incident reportedly took place on July 16, 2024, around 10:30 p.m., when the gang trailed and ambushed their victim in Gbaga. According to police reports, the suspects fired shots into the air to disperse bystanders, forcibly dragged the owner out of the vehicle, and sped off with the stolen car and phone.
A vigilant citizen who witnessed the robbery immediately alerted the IRT unit stationed in Ikorodu. Acting on the tip-off, the police team quickly mobilized and pursued the suspects. Through intelligence gathering, the operatives were able to track down and arrest the gang members at a hideout in Ikorodu. The stolen vehicle and phone were recovered during the operation, along with two locally made pistols found in the suspects' possession.
The suspects were subsequently charged at the Igbosere Magistrate’s Court, sitting at the Tinubu Magistrate’s Court on Lagos Island, on a two-count charge of armed robbery. Police counsel Amedu Adoga informed the court that the defendants committed the robbery on July 16, 2024, and fled the scene before being apprehended by the authorities.
Due to the gravity of the offense, which falls under armed robbery, the magistrate did not take the plea of the defendants, as the lower court lacks jurisdiction over robbery cases. Magistrate B.A. Sonuga ordered that the case file be duplicated and sent to the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP) at Alausa, Ikeja, for legal advice. The case has been adjourned pending the DPP's recommendations.
