A prominent diaspora group under the banner #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria has announced plans to stage a major protest against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the upcoming 79th United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The assembly, set to take place from September 10 to 30, 2024, will serve as the backdrop for the group's demonstration. The protestors aim to push for significant changes within the Nigerian government.
In a joint statement issued by Austin Ikpeme and Peter Olagunju, the group outlined their primary demands. These include the "immediate release of journalist and whistleblower Bristol Isaac Tamunobiefiri, also known as PIDOM, along with others detained during the #EndBadGovernance protests in Nigeria."
Additionally, the group is calling on President Tinubu to "reduce the size of government, dismiss non-performing appointees, and eradicate corruption and looting."
The protest is scheduled to commence on September 15, 2024, at 9 a.m., outside the Nigerian House located at 828 Second Avenue, New York.
The statement read, "We must free Nigeria and Nigerians from Bola Tinubu's kleptocratic and authoritarian regime."
The group emphasized its goal to spotlight what it characterizes as "corruption, human rights abuses, and injustice" under President Tinubu’s administration. They also urged the international community to recognize their cause as they seek to hold the Nigerian leader accountable for his actions.
