Nigerian actor Yemi Solade has raised concerns on social media regarding the validity of doctorate degrees awarded to Nigerian celebrities by universities in Benin Republic and Togo. This follows recent revelations by the Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, about the alarming number of fake degree certificates held by Nigerians.
The Minister disclosed that between 2019 and 2023, a staggering 22,789 Nigerians were found to be using fake degrees obtained from institutions in Benin Republic and Togo. Of these, 21,684 certificates were from Benin Republic, while 1,105 were from Togo. The Minister emphasized that these degrees were from schools not recognized by their respective countries to offer such programs.
"We have had to take some major decisions here at the Ministry of Education. Some staff members who were affected faced disciplinary measures," Mamman stated. "We cannot have in our midst people who procured fake certificates competing with students who graduated from universities and polytechnics through their sweat."
Reacting to the scandal on his Instagram page, Solade questioned the fate of the honorary doctorate degrees that have been "splashed" on Nigerian celebrities by these foreign institutions.
Solade's comments have sparked discussions about the credibility of foreign degrees and the implications for Nigerian celebrities who have been awarded such honors.
