A tragic incident in the Shogoye community near Owode Egba has resulted in the death of Nwachukwu Ikechukwu, while his wife, Oyin Falodun, is currently hospitalized after both inhaled toxic fumes from their generator.
According to reports, the couple was discovered by a community member, Oladayo Olasubomi, who had come to deliver a daily contribution of ₦1,000 to Oyin. Upon entering their residence, Olasubomi found Ikechukwu lifeless on the floor, while his wife lay unconscious beside him. Alarmed, she immediately alerted other residents who rushed to assist.
Police Public Relations Officer Omolola Odutola confirmed the incident, stating that community chairman Showunmi Sunday reported the situation around 11:00 a.m. on Friday. Officers were dispatched to the scene, where they found Ikechukwu deceased and his wife unresponsive. Both were subsequently taken to Ore Ofe Hospital in Owode Egba for treatment.
Odutola detailed the events leading to the tragedy. Oyin revealed that the couple had fallen asleep after turning on the generator to power a fan in their bedroom. She recalled asking her husband if she should turn off the generator, but he advised against it. Later, when the generator shut down due to running out of fuel, Ikechukwu was found struggling to get out of bed before collapsing.
“There were no signs of violence,” Odutola noted, emphasizing the dangers of generator fumes. Oyin regained consciousness and recounted the harrowing experience of discovering her husband on the floor.
The deceased's body has been transferred to the General Hospital, Owode Egba, for an autopsy, and police investigations are ongoing to gather more details about the incident.
