Popular relationship expert, Blessing Okoro, also known as Blessing CEO, has opened up about her harrowing time in prison following her arrest in March 2023 for alleged cyberbullying. Her legal trouble stemmed from her involvement in the controversy surrounding Lagos-based auto dealer Ikechukwu Ogbonna, widely known as IVD, and his late wife, Bimbo Ogbonna. Blessing gained her freedom in April 2023.
In a recent interview with media personality DaddyFreeze, Blessing detailed her traumatic first day behind bars. She described the ordeal of being stripped, searched thoroughly by prison wardens, and having her personal items, including her phone and wig, confiscated. "My first day in prison was traumatic," she said, recalling how she was placed in a bedbug-infested room with two other inmates.
By the second day, Blessing was moved to a cell where she interacted with other prisoners. She likened life in prison to a boarding house, explaining that inmates had the ability to make their stay as comfortable as they could afford. While prisoners were provided with basic food, those who could afford it were allowed to purchase meals from restaurants inside the prison, although these meals came at a steep price.
Blessing also revealed that the prison she was in had a phone booth, where inmates could call their loved ones. However, mobile phones were strictly forbidden, classified as contraband, though some prisoners found ways to smuggle them in. "Phones are officially not allowed, but we live in a corrupt country. Some people always find ways around it," she said.
Addressing the controversy around her Instagram post while she was still in custody, Blessing recounted how she managed to upload a photo. After borrowing a phone from a prison warden to make a transfer, she took the opportunity to post on social media. "Busybody like me, I posted a picture and wrote ‘One man mopol, no shaking’. I didn't even know I was trending."
Her post triggered a commotion among prison authorities, who believed she had access to a mobile phone. "By 1 a.m., about seven wardens came knocking, searching our cell because they thought I had a phone. But I had already returned it," she explained.
Blessing's story sheds light on the conditions within Nigerian prisons and the challenges inmates face.
