Nollywood actress Ebun Hodo has weighed in on the debate surrounding the role of physical appearance in the Nigerian film industry, asserting that talent, rather than beauty or sex appeal, is what ultimately sustains an acting career.
In an interview with *Potpourri*, the actress expressed her belief that while looks may open doors, they are not enough to guarantee long-term success in Nollywood. “I personally do not think beauty and sex appeal are enough for you to succeed in the Nollywood industry. There is a saying that goes, ‘Many are called, but few are chosen,’” she stated.
Hodo emphasized the importance of skill and dedication in an actor’s career, questioning whether those in the industry have the depth required to deliver authentic performances. “Are you really among the chosen? Do you have the knowledge of what you are doing? Can you interpret roles with depth and conviction?” she asked.
She further dismissed the idea that good looks alone can lead to success, hinting at the shortcuts some may take. “If not, I’m sorry ma’am, your distribution of sex appeal won’t take you anywhere in Nollywood, except through the usual shortcuts like juju.”
The actress concluded by urging aspiring actors to focus on developing their craft, rather than relying solely on their appearance. “Nollywood is an industry where talent and dedication matter more than looks. You need to bring something real to the table, whether it’s passion, hard work, or a commitment to your craft, because looks will only get you so far,” she said.
Hodo's comments highlight a broader conversation about the demands of the entertainment industry, and her stance underscores the importance of talent in a highly competitive field.
