Pastor Enoch Adeboye, General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), has addressed recent criticism over the luxurious gift of a Rolls Royce to Bishop David Oyedepo on his 70th birthday, stating that clergymen and Christians would be blamed if they die poor.
The statement from Pastor Adeboye comes after a backlash erupted over the birthday celebration at the Living Faith Church headquarters in Ota, Ogun State, where Bishop Oyedepo received a Rolls Royce and N1 billion in donations. The extravagant gifts have drawn ire from a section of Nigerians questioning the display of wealth by religious leaders.
In response, Pastor Adeboye defended the gesture, emphasizing that it is better to die wealthy than to live in poverty. Speaking in a video to his congregation, he remarked: “Someone gave a bishop a car and some people got very upset, asking why a bishop should drive a Rolls Royce. It’s as if being a bishop means you should die of hunger.”
He continued, “If you die poor, they will blame you and say, 'After all those years of serving God, this is how you ended?' But if you start living in abundance, they will attack you. So, which one do you choose? You will be attacked whether you die poor or live in wealth.”
Adeboye's remarks appear to highlight the pressure faced by clergy members regarding their financial status, emphasizing that criticism comes regardless of their economic condition. His comments add to the ongoing debate about the role of wealth within religious institutions, especially as it relates to public perception of Christian leaders.
