The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Tuesday, provided clarification regarding the arrest of Favour Ekoh, a presenter at Urban Radio 94.5FM, Enugu, in connection to an alleged N700 million Ponzi scheme fraud involving 50 victims.
Speaking on his arrest in an official statement issued by the anti-graft agency, the arrest took place on Monday after a team of four operatives from the EFCC’s Enugu Zonal Directorate visited the station with a warrant for Ekoh’s arrest.
According to the agency, Ekoh is under investigation for allegedly luring investors into a scheme called “Life Trading” run by Leverage Index Limited.
The company allegedly promised investors a 10% return on their capital but failed to deliver. Instead, the company closed its office without returning any funds to the victims.
Ekoh is the primary contact between the investors and the company.
He was reportedly the only person the victims could hold responsible for their losses.
EFCC operatives, upon arriving at Urban Radio, informed the station’s Managing Director, Bamikole Owoyomi, of their mission.
However, the situation escalated when the station’s chairman reportedly ordered the gates to be locked, trapping the EFCC officers inside.
In response, the EFCC called for backup, which led to the arrest of Owoyomi, Ekoh, and two security guards on charges of obstructing justice.
EFCC emphasized that Ekoh was not arrested while on air and that no equipment or lawful activities of the radio station were disrupted during the operation.
Ekoh has since been released after making a statement to the EFCC regarding the case.
The EFCC condemned the actions of the radio station’s staff, labelling the obstruction of its officers as unlawful.
The agency further urged the International Press Institute (IPI) and the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) to investigate the conduct of the radio station in light of integrity and ethical professional practices.
EFCC reiterated that it holds the media in high regard as a crucial partner in the fight against economic crimes but stressed that such interference in law enforcement activities cannot be tolerated.
