Bournemouth midfielder Malachi Ogunleye has committed his international future to Nigeria, ending speculation about whether he would represent England or Nigeria. Ogunleye, who was born to a Nigerian father and raised in England, recently confirmed his decision following a visit to Nigeria earlier this year.
In an interview with Bournemouth’s official website, Ogunleye expressed his appreciation for the support he received from Nigerian media during his trip. “I’ve had some recognition from the newspapers in Nigeria, so it’s been nice to see that,” he shared, hinting at the growing connection with his Nigerian roots.
Reports from England suggest that Ogunleye’s choice to play for Nigeria places him in line for a spot in the 2025 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations in South Africa. The Flying Eagles secured their position in the competition after winning the WAFU B U-20 Championship in Togo last month.
Currently in the first year of a two-year scholarship with Bournemouth, Ogunleye has been a consistent presence in the club’s U-20 lineup this season, building on his tenure with Bournemouth’s youth teams since age 11.
