The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a stern warning to bakeries across Nigeria to cease the use of saccharin and bromate in bread production. The caution was delivered by the agency's Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, during a News Forum appearance, where she highlighted the health risks and regulatory consequences associated with these substances.
Prof. Adeyeye emphasized that NAFDAC will not hesitate to take severe actions against violators, including shutting down offending bakeries. "Our post-marketing surveillance is crucial. We routinely investigate products based on complaints or during routine inspections," she stated.
She disclosed that several bakeries have already faced closure for using bromate, a banned substance, in bread production. “We have closed down a few bakeries because they are using bromate. If we receive reports or detect bromate in bread through testing, the bakery will be immediately shut down,” Prof. Adeyeye asserted.
In addition to targeting bakeries, NAFDAC has also intensified its crackdown on substandard water production factories operating under unhygienic conditions. Prof. Adeyeye explained that the agency's Regulatory Inspection Directorate plays a vital role in ensuring compliance. “We inspect and test products to confirm that what was registered with NAFDAC matches what is being sold in the market,” she said.
The Director-General expressed concern over some businesses altering their production processes or formulas after receiving regulatory approval. “Sometimes, after products are registered, manufacturers change their formulas or production processes. Post-marketing surveillance ensures that the approved standards are maintained in the market,” she explained, emphasizing the importance of sustained market control.
NAFDAC's warning comes as part of its broader efforts to safeguard public health and uphold product quality standards across Nigeria. The agency urged bakeries and manufacturers to prioritize compliance to avoid penalties and ensure consumer safety.
