The Cross River State Police Command has apprehended one Victor Eyop on suspicion of trafficking girls from Nigeria to Libya.
Gyogon Grimah, the State Police Commissioner, revealed this on Monday at a press conference in Calabar, the state capital.
On November 9, a man named Mr. Chidi Samuel in Calabar reported a case of human trafficking against the suspect, according to Grimah.
He stated that on the mentioned date, Samuel alleged that the suspect, along with his wife, Mrs. Esther Eyop, was involved in recruiting Ms. Deborah Nyong.
“They also recruited two others, Ms Anita Lawrence, 25, and Ms Mabel Tom, 16, for human trafficking to Libya after they were tested for the Human Immune Virus, HIV, and other segxwally Transmitted Diseases, STIs.
“After the test, the suspect took them to his house and the next day gave them a substance they were to mix in their bath water for cleansing before embarking on the journey.
“On November 12, the suspect and his wife drove the girls to Bogobiri Street in Calabar, where they booked tickets and transported them to Kaduna with arrangements with one Hajiya (names unknown) to receive the girls in Kaduna,” he said.
The police chief disclosed that in Kaduna, a taxi driver was assigned to transport the girls to Katsina. However, the vehicle broke down on the way.
Grimah stated that it was at this moment the victims discovered they were being trafficked. They began reaching out for help, prompting the complainant, Samuel, to send them money via a Point of Sale (POS) operator.
He claimed that with the money, the victims took a cab back to Kaduna and returned to Calabar on November 15.
He mentioned that the suspect would face court proceedings once the investigation is complete.
