In a major operation targeting cybercrime, operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have apprehended 105 individuals, including four Chinese nationals, in a business apartment in the Gudu area of Abuja. The arrests were announced by the EFCC on Friday, January 10, 2025, through a post on its X (formerly Twitter) handle.

According to the EFCC, the suspects, comprising 67 males and 38 females, were allegedly involved in a fraudulent hotel review job scheme aimed at defrauding victims and businesses in Europe and other parts of the world. Investigations into the scam are ongoing, and the commission stated that the suspects would face prosecution upon the completion of inquiries.

This latest operation underscores the EFCC’s intensified efforts to combat internet fraud across Nigeria. Recent months have seen a series of high-profile actions by the anti-graft agency, resulting in significant arrests and convictions.

In October 2024, ten individuals were sentenced to varying prison terms and fines for crimes related to internet fraud, impersonation, and employment scams. A further crackdown in December 2024 led to the EFCC’s largest single-day operation, where 792 suspects were arrested in Lagos. This included 158 foreigners and 634 Nigerians involved in cryptocurrency and romance scam syndicates.

The commission’s resolve to maintain internal integrity has also seen it take action against erring officers. In 2024, 27 EFCC personnel were dismissed for misconduct and fraudulent activities, following recommendations by the EFCC Staff Disciplinary Committee. These dismissals were subsequently ratified by the EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, as part of a broader effort to uphold the agency’s credibility.

Meanwhile, the EFCC has launched an investigation into a $400,000 fraud allegation involving a yet-to-be-identified staff member and a sectional head. The commission’s spokesman, Dele Oyewale, emphasized the agency’s commitment to integrity and transparency, stating that such measures are essential to sustain public trust.

As the EFCC continues its crackdown on cybercrime and internal misconduct, the agency’s actions signal a determined effort to restore confidence in Nigeria’s fight against corruption and internet fraud.
