Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have successfully intercepted a 40ft trailer loaded with 2,217.6 kilograms of skunk, a potent strain of cannabis, in a major drug bust in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
Femi Babafemi, the Director of Media & Advocacy at NDLEA, confirmed the operation in a statement issued on Sunday, January 12, 2025. According to Babafemi, the interception occurred on Saturday, January 11, 2025, at an abandoned fuel station in Kagini, Kubwa, where the illicit consignment was being transferred into six separate vehicles for distribution to northern states.
The vehicles seized during the operation included a Toyota Van, Toyota Camry, Toyota Sienna bus, a JAC 4-wheel-drive Hilux truck, a Toyota Corolla, and a Vento Passat. In addition to the drugs, the authorities also seized the trailer used to transport the illicit cargo.
A 42-year-old suspect, Isaac Monday Desmond, was arrested in connection with the operation. The drugs were loaded into the trailer in Uzebba, located in the Owan Local Council area of Edo State, prior to Desmond’s arrest.
Babafemi emphasized that the intelligence-led operation was a significant success in the ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in Nigeria. The NDLEA has vowed to continue its crackdown on drug syndicates and their distribution networks across the country.
