I cant but marvel at the saying that if you do not stand for something you will fall for anything.
It finally got manifested over the weekend when the second of two female colleagues at one of the leading banks in Nigeria had her wedding here in Lagos.
The first of the two colleagues got married a week earlier and happened to have contracted part of our services for her wedding. Every time I happen to visit my client at work (ie the bank), the second colleague always had a negative discouraging comment or issue against our discussion. I sensed that her aim was to make her friend follow her strategy of wedding planning by being personally in charge of EVERYTHING. I remember on one occasion she said we event planners were opportunists who propose quality and deliver sub-standard, it was at this point that I came out blunt with my client whether she really needed my services.
Her bone of contention was that my prices for same tasks she also had for her wedding were lower and could not admit that my services would be better than what she is putting together.
Her point of U-turn was at her colleagues wedding reception one week before her own wedding day. It was at the venue she collected my phone number from her colleague as she contacted me as early as before eight o clock in the morning for an appointment with her in the office that same day.
It was there and then I saw that a lot of money had been siphoned from her for all similar services to that of her colleague (my client) as I did a comparative analysis with her. “It’s too late to make drastic changes”, I told her. Her eyes were now opened to the importance of an event planner. She was totally broken at the total differential of a little over 100k.
To cut the story short, she totally lamented to me after her wedding reception because the quality and organization of what was delivered all fell far short of that of her colleague who did not spend as much as she did.
My client stood for something by deciding to engage the services of an event planner for her wedding while the story of her colleague tells the story.
