A mysterious illness has claimed the lives of at least two individuals and hospitalized over 27 others in Bida, Niger State, causing widespread panic among residents of the Laruta area.
The illness, which presents symptoms such as sudden collapse, body weakness, and an inability to communicate, recently led to the death of Alhaji Abubakar, the Chief Imam of Laruta. According to his family, the late cleric passed away after spending five days at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Bida.
Speaking to reporters, his son, Mohammed Surajo Abubakar, shared, *“My father died three weeks ago from an unknown illness. Doctors conducted several checks at FMC Bida but couldn’t identify the cause.”*
His wife, Hadiza Abubakar, recounted her husband's final moments, saying, *“He first felt feverish and asked his children to wake him for Juma’at prayer. When they tried to wake him, he couldn’t respond, prompting us to rush him to the hospital.”*
Local medical practitioner, Dr. Aliyu Alhaji Alkali, disclosed that he has treated 17 patients with similar symptoms at his facility, referring critical cases to FMC Bida and other hospitals. He described the symptoms as including *“body weakness, unresponsiveness, and sudden collapse while sitting or standing.”*
In a heartbreaking incident, an elderly woman reportedly collapsed and died instantly after witnessing her son’s condition, further deepening concerns in the community.
Residents have expressed alarm over the outbreak, as many affected individuals struggle with fever and prolonged unconsciousness, leaving some unable to walk or speak after regaining consciousness.
Health authorities are yet to identify the cause of the illness, which has primarily affected Laruta and surrounding areas. Investigations are ongoing, and the government is being urged to intervene swiftly to prevent further spread of the mysterious disease.
