Peter Obi Plans To Retire As Teacher In Onitsha To Inspire Youths (Photos)

Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State and the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has disclosed his intention to retire as a secondary school teacher in Onitsha to motivate and guide young minds. 

Obi made the announcement on Friday during an interaction with final-year students of Dennis Memorial Grammar School, Onitsha, as part of activities marking the International Day of Education. 

Reflecting on the importance of education, Obi said, *“Education is the most important asset in your life. It is the capital that guarantees success. That you are here shows you’re already on the path to greatness. Some of you will become governors, presidents, and leaders tomorrow, and your education will play a vital role in shaping that future.”* 

The former governor shared a personal anecdote from his childhood, recalling a moment in 1970 when he stood at the school gate to salute General Yakubu Gowon during a visit. *“Through education, I grew from being one of the children singing for him to sitting at the same table with him to make important decisions,”* he recounted. 

Obi revealed that his love for education and youth development fuels his aspiration to return to Onitsha in the future and take up teaching. *“I hope to retire here someday and become a secondary school teacher to inspire children,”* he stated. 

The event also coincided with the school’s centenary celebration, further highlighting the institution's legacy of academic excellence. Obi’s visit and his heartfelt words left a lasting impression on the students, inspiring them to value education as a tool for transformation and success.
