The Nigerian Army (NA) has successfully dismantled 13 illegal oil bunkering sites and seized over 300,000 liters of stolen crude oil in a series of operations across the Niger Delta. The operations, which took place between January 20 and 26, 2025, targeted oil theft in Edo, Delta, and Rivers States and resulted in the arrest of 15 suspects.
The raids, which were part of ongoing anti-crude theft efforts, also led to the destruction of four boats and the deactivation of over 150 locally made ovens used for illegal refining. The troops uncovered several significant sites and items used in the theft and illegal refining of oil.
In Edo State, a major discovery was made at Ugo Community in Orhiomwon Local Government Area, where troops recovered 252,000 liters of stolen crude oil. They also seized a pumping machine, hoses, and pipes used to siphon the oil.
In Delta State, the operation targeted a pipeline theft site in a remote area where a DAF Tanker Truck was caught siphoning crude. The truck had already taken over 15,000 liters before being intercepted, with a capacity of 30,000 liters.
Rivers State saw significant confiscations, with over 10,000 liters of stolen crude seized from the Imo River corridor. During follow-up operations, an illegal refining site was discovered in Odagwa, along with a pump-action gun.
Additionally, three illegal refining sites were dismantled at the Obiafu Oil Field in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area. Seized items included 10 cooking drums, eight reservoirs, and two rolls of hoses. In Abalama Community, concealed jerrycans containing illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) and Dual Purpose Kerosene (DPK) were uncovered.
Major General Emmanuel Eric Emekah, General Officer Commanding (GOC) 6 Division, Nigerian Army, reaffirmed the commitment of the Army to protect the nation’s oil infrastructure and eliminate economic sabotage. He warned that those involved in oil theft and pipeline vandalism would face intensified operations and urged them to seek legitimate means of livelihood.
This successful operation was conducted by troops from the 6 Division in collaboration with other security agencies, showcasing a united front in the fight against illegal oil activities in the region.
