Suspected terrorists affiliated with Jama’at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM) have carried out a devastating assault on a town in southern Burkina Faso, leaving destruction and chaos in their wake.
The attack, which occurred on January 23, 2025, was revealed by Zagazola Makama, a counter-terrorism expert specializing in the Lake Chad Basin. Makama shared details of the incident on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, highlighting the group’s use of overwhelming firepower and tactical precision to overwhelm local defenses.
Witnesses reported that dozens of fighters executed a “submersion attack,” utilizing sustained gunfire from mounted heavy machine guns, including a double-barreled 14.5mm weapon—a signature feature of the group’s recent escalations. The coordinated assault overran security positions, leaving the town vulnerable.
Makama’s post also included images and accounts from the scene, underscoring the scale of the devastation. The incident is part of a growing pattern of violence attributed to JNIM, which has intensified its operations across the Sahel region in recent months.
Authorities are yet to release an official statement, but efforts are reportedly underway to assess the damage and restore security in the affected area. This latest attack has further highlighted the challenges facing Burkina Faso as it grapples with escalating insecurity and insurgency in the region.
