Victoria Ogunremi, a Nigerian-American woman working in New Jersey, has received widespread admiration for her remarkable act of honesty after returning $5,700 in cash she discovered in the restroom at her workplace.
Speaking to journalists on Monday, Ogunremi explained that her decision to return the money was driven by both her concern for the person who lost it and her strong Christian values.
“The thought of the pain or trauma it could cause inspired me,” Ogunremi shared. “I did not hesitate to return it because of my Christian faith and beliefs. Honesty brings peace of mind, and it is the key virtue I cherish.”
After finding the money, Ogunremi took immediate action by locating the owner and notifying her employer's management about the discovery. Her honesty was met with praise from both her colleagues and the management team.
“The management was very pleased and proud of me. The owner was incredibly grateful and showered me with praises,” Ogunremi recounted.
Her colleagues, who were familiar with her character, were not surprised by the gesture, highlighting her long-standing reputation for kindness and integrity.
Ogunremi attributed her strong moral compass to the teachings of her late father, who instilled in her the principle of never taking what doesn’t belong to her. “He taught us never to take what does not belong to us,” she said.
