Suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, returned to Nigeria on Friday evening after a two-week trip abroad, amid heightened political tensions and security concerns in the state.
Fubara’s plane touched down at the international wing of Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, around 7 p.m., where he was quietly received by a handful of aides. He was immediately ushered into a waiting SUV that sped off without public comments or formal statements.
Although officially said to be on vacation in Germany, sources revealed that Governor Fubara made a stop in London for a closed-door meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The content of their discussion remains undisclosed, but it comes in the wake of a sweeping political shake-up in Rivers State.
President Tinubu recently suspended Governor Fubara, his deputy Prof. Ngozi Odu, and members of the State House of Assembly, citing escalating threats to national infrastructure. The declaration of a state of emergency followed a series of attacks on oil pipelines reportedly carried out by militant elements in the region.
The crisis unfolds against a backdrop of fierce rivalry between Fubara and 27 state lawmakers, believed to be loyal to Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, a political heavyweight and Fubara’s estranged ally.
The governor’s return is expected to stir fresh political waves, with analysts watching closely for the next move in the unfolding power tussle.
