A wave of sorrow has engulfed the academic community following the tragic death of three children of Professor Yusuf Attahir Baba, the former Provost of the American University of Nigeria (AUN), also known as ABTI American University.
The heartbreaking accident occurred on Friday night, claiming the lives of the professor’s children in what sources described as a ghastly motor crash. The devastating news has sparked an outpouring of grief across the nation, particularly among those connected to the academic and educational sectors.
Reacting to the tragedy, the founder of AUN and former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, expressed deep sorrow over the loss. In a condolence message released on Saturday, Atiku said, “It is with a heavy heart that I condole with the family of Professor Yusuf Attahir Baba on the loss of three children in a ghastly motor accident last night.”
He further urged Nigerians to remember the bereaved family in prayers during this profoundly difficult period. “May Allah grant them comfort and accept the return of the departed souls. Amin,” he added.
Professor Baba, known for his dedication to academic excellence and leadership at AUN, is widely respected for his contributions to higher education in Nigeria. His time as Provost at AUN helped shape the institution’s reputation as Africa’s first development-focused university.
Since news of the tragedy broke, friends, colleagues, students, and members of the public have taken to social media and community platforms to express their condolences and support, with many describing the incident as “unimaginable” and “devastating.”
As the nation mourns with the Baba family, tributes continue to pour in for the young lives lost too soon.
