Lino Mamour, 42, pleaded guilty to murder after stabbing his wife, who was three months' pregnant, at their Dandenong home in August last year.
Justice Paul Coghlan said Mamour appeared to form an unwarranted belief that his wife was being unfaithful.
"There is no evidence on which it could be concluded that your wife was unfaithful to you," Justice Coghlan said in the Victorian Supreme Court today.
However the judge said he accepted that for some reason Mamour believed she had been unfaithful.
The Sudanese refugee became an Australian citizen in 2008 and returned to Sudan to marry Juana Anton Flamino Legge that year.
Ms Legge arrived in Australia in June 2010 and quickly became pregnant
Immediately after stabbing Ms Legge on August 24 last year, Mamour went to the Dandenong Police Station in badly blood-stained clothes and told police he had killed his wife.
Justice Coghlan said the 29-year-old, who was a mother figure to many of her siblings, was greatly missed by her large family.
"They mourn her loss greatly and their loss is heightened by the fact that she was pregnant at the time of her death," he said.
The court had heard that the Sudanese community also mourned Ms Legge's death and felt that Mamour had brought shame on them.
Justice Coghlan jailed Mamour for 18 years with a non-parole period of 14 years, saying it was a very serious and brutal attack on a defenceless woman.
He said he took into account a number of factors including Mamour's early guilty plea and was satisfied that he was genuinely sorry for what he had done.
Mamour fled war-torn Sudan in 1999 then went to Egypt before moving to Australia in 2002 with his two nephews.
