DELTA State Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Mamman Tsafe's, pledge that the general elections in the state will be violence-free may be a mirage if the impounding, last Wednesday, of a Kia Rio car that was fully loaded with guns, explosives and grenades by the police at Patani, Delta State, is anything to go by.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Charles Muka, who confirmed the incident, revealed that the arms cache included a rocket propelled grenade, five dynamites, 25 cartridges, seven single barrel guns and two double barrel guns.
A police source said two policemen who escorted the car and an aide of a prominent candidate in one of the political parties, were apprehended by the police at a checkpoint at the border town between Delta and Bayelsa states.
Marked XB 184 BRS Bayelsa State and draped with the campaign posters of one of the South-South governors, the car and three occupants are currently being detained at the police headquarters in Asaba.
In his determination to ensure peaceful elections, Tsafe had pledged that Naval personnel would be deployed to the riverine communities to maintain peace while soldiers would be deployed to hot spots.
A top opposition politician in Patani Local Council said he was shell-shocked by the huge quantity of arms recovered. According to him, there is no doubt that the arms were destined for political thugs who are out to perpetuate violence in tomorrow's National Assembly election.
The council has been in the news lately. Only last January, a top member of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former Transition Committee chairman of Patani Local Council, Mr. Paul Atie, was shot dead by some unidentified assailants.
