No fewer than 10 persons drowned on Saturday when their boat capsized on the waterways between Oriba village and Epe, Lagos State. Six dead bodies have been recovered while four others are still missing.
Daily Sun reliably gathered that some early morning travelers from Oriba village who were trying to beat the 8 am Independent National Electorate Commission (INEC) restriction of movement met their death in the middle of the river.
It was gathered that the small boat which has the capacity for about 12 passengers was overloaded.
A police officer who spoke on the condition of anonymity blamed the boat operator for the tragedy.
He said preliminary investigation showed that there was rush by passengers but the operator would not have exceeded the capacity of the boat.
The police officer said the boat operator survived the tragedy and was being quizzed by the police.
An unconfirmed report has it that four INEC officials allegedly died in the boat mishap. However, the police have deployed Marine police to the scene to fish out the missing persons.
The newly posted Commissioner of Police (CP), Mr. Suleiman Abba, who confirmed the report dispelled the rumour that INEC personnel were involved in the boat mishap. Abba said the report at his disposal showed that 10 persons died in a boat mishap at the Epe area but there was no such report that INEC officials were involved.
