Nigerian footballers are reportedly roaming the streets of Vietnam after they were unable to get clubs in the Asian country.
Nigerian players like Timothy Anjembe, Ganiyu Oseni, Razak Ekpoki and others have invaded Vietnam recently to play professional football,
Our correspondent learnt that some of them were taken to the country only to be abandoned to their fate by dubious managers.
A Nigerian footballer in Vietnam, who preferred anonymity for fear of being attacked, told our correspondent on the telephone on Wednesday that the footballers had resorted to nefarious activities for survival.
Our source said, "There are so many Nigerian players here (Vietnam) without clubs. They come here and refuse to go back to Nigeria when they are not able to secure contracts.
"Their visas are expired and they don't have work permits so they resort to begging for survival because they cannot get jobs here. Some of them take to drug deals. They are just here destroying Nigeria's image, it's very bad.
"Those that are actually playing give money to the stranded ones but not all the time and this causes problems because the stranded ones feel it's their right to be given money on a daily basis. I don't like admitting that I am a Nigerian here because people have a bad impression about us.
"They go out everyday looking for women to sleep with and get them to pay them. Vietnam is very poor; Nigeria is better. There are homeless people. The foreign players are here because they are well paid."
Worldnomads.com in 2009 quoted Aaron Ewedafe, a 24-year-old Nigerian footballer, as saying that Nigerian footballers were taken to Vietnam by managers only to be dumped for Brazilian players and released from their contracts.
"We're being treated savagely," Ewedafe said.
