The governor spoke in Awka on Monday while presenting cheques to communities for the construction of classroom blocks in primary schools in the 177 communities in the state.
He expressed displeasure with what he called the poor attitude to work by civil servants and said henceforth, workers should stay back at work.
"I've observed that every week starting from Thursdays, offices are deserted by workers who say they are attending one burial or the other. We're not running a charitable organisation and this must stop," he warned.
Though the governor promised that the state would pay the new minimum wage to its workers, it was yet to start its implementation.
Obi also admonished the workers in charge of the Government House Conference Hall, who he said had failed in their duty to maintain facilities at the centre.
He said he could not understand why the four air-conditioners in the hall were not working, while the officer in charge could not be found because he had travelled for a burial.
He said this poor attitude to work was being replicated by some communities, who got funds to construct classroom blocks, but were yet to do anything.
The state government is funding the five-classroom projects with N6m each, bringing it to a total of N1.062bn for the 177 communities.
He said the attitude was what informed the decision of his government to post the newly recruited teachers to their communities so that their people would monitor their commitment to duty.
He said the condition for the receipt of the cheques was based on performance with the ones earlier given.
"For schools within your community, if you must employ teachers, let them employ people to teach in their communities. We will write communities to monitor them," Obi said.
In his reaction, the President General of the Nkwelle Ezunaka Town Union, Chief Chris Eleumunoh, praised the governor's gesture and promised that the communities would seize the opportunity to develop schools in their localities.
Also speaking, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Projects and Maintenance, Mr. Nwanne Ejikeme, said the communities had not let the government down with the projects. He assured that the government would continue to support them.
