Following complaints of extortion by soldiers manning the various checkpoints in the country, the Nigerian Army hierarchy has set a machinery in motion to arrest erring soldiers and the givers of the bribe.
Informed military sources disclosed to the Nigerian Tribune in Abuja at the weekend, that the trend was becoming embarrassing to the Nigerian Army hence, it wants to arrest the situation with immediate effect.
The various checkpoints in Abuja and other major cities in the country were set up in the wake of incessant attacks and bombings by the Boko Haram sect.
The sources revealed that the decision to checkmate extortion by soldiers at checkpoints was taken at the Chief of Army Staff third quarter conference held in Abuja recently.
Nigerian Tribune gathered that the matter was exhaustively deliberated upon at the meeting.
It was further learnt that officers of the military intelligence and provost would monitor the activities of the soldiers at the checkpoints, while pretending to be motorists as they would not be in uniform.
The soldier, the source continued, would be charged according to military laws, while the giver would be charged to civil court to be prosecuted by military lawyers.
