After sixty-nine years of existence as a colonial security agency, the Nigeria Police Force may soon receive its first update and sweeping reform through an act of the National Assembly.
The bill for the police reform, a bill for an act to establish and regulate the Nigeria Police Service, sponsored by Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba advanced through second reading at the Senate on Wednesday.
The bill seeks to replace the existing Nigeria Police Force with the Nigeria Police service, stripping the force of its combative policy and establishing a more contemporary and civil security agency.
“The general idea behind this bill is the establishment of a service oriented modern police that will meet the globally acceptable policing standards in a democratic setting, to replace the current police force which was conceptualised and established in the colonial environment, more to protect the colonial interest than to protect and safeguard the Nigerian citizen,” Ndoma-Egba said.
