Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Kano State chapter, has apealed to President Goodluck Jonathan to stop the Kano State Government from funding the Kano State Hisbah Board from the state’s federal allocation.

Hisbah is an Islamic board set up to implement Sharia Law in the state.

But the Ohanaeze President in the state, Chief Tobias Idika, in an interview with our correspondent on Tuesday, alleged that the activities of Hisbah were against non-Muslims and non-natives of the state.

He therefore insisted that there was no justification for the existence of the board.

Idika, who is also the President-General, Leaders of Ethnic Communities Resident in Kano, recalled that Hisbah was banned by the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

He said, “They are a source of nightmare, intimidation and harassment to non-Muslims and non-natives of Kano. They are still mounting roadblocks on federal highways and waylaying truck drivers.

“Sometimes, they inflict injuries on their victims. The worst part of it is that, if they find out that the truck is conveying alcoholic beverages, they will seize them and the truck. This is without any recourse to any legal process, the police and the law courts.”

Idika added, “They operate as a state police. They have makeshift prisons all over the state where they detain their victims without recourse to the police and its constitutional responsibilities.

“This is particularly so, when Section 214 of the 1999 Constitution prohibits the establishment of a state police by any of the component states.

“It has even gone to the extent that if they seize any truck and its contents, and when the police demand that they present such trucks, they turn down such requests. The question I ask is; why is Kano allowed to run a republic within a republic?”

Idika alleged that Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso had not fulfilled his pledge not to enforce the Shariah Law on non-Muslims or non-natives resident in Kano.

He said, “This year alone, the Hisbah has seized more than 10 trailers presumed to be carrying alcoholic drinks, but today no one can tell specifically what has happened to those trucks and their contents.

“Kano State cannot come up with a religious law and pronounce that alcohol is banned in the state when the 1999 Constitution states that there shall be no state religion.”

The Ohanaeze leader wondered why the state government, through its Hisbah Board was operating outside the constitution, when it is not a country or Island of its own.

Many religion leaders stil havnt learnt how to present comments on religious matter without provoking anger. Why dont you leave their state 4them if you are nt satisfied wt their practices? We dnt need this kind of talk now as Nigerians are busy trying to find solutions to d menace of Boko Haram. Yoruba people in their xracteristic proverbial saying will say, 'we are trying to finish up ekuru from d plate, and you are stil busy brushing its crumbs into d gilded plate.
