House of Representatives on Tuesday ordered an investigation into the Federal Government’s plan to hike electricity tariff effective June 1.

It invited the Minister of Power, Prof. Barth Nnaji, and the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission to appear before its Committee on Power within one week to explain the rationale for the hike.

The resolution followed a motion by a lawmaker from Lagos State, Mr. Yacoob Balogun, who drew the attention of the House to the tariff hike under matters of urgent public importance.

The Action Congress of Nigeria legislator observed that it would be unfair to Nigerians to ask them to pay more for electricity they did not enjoy.

He argued that the Power Holding Company of Nigeria had continued to send bills to Nigerians even when it was aware that power supply in the country was erratic.

Balogun also said PHCN had reportedly frustrated the distribution of pre-paid metres to Nigerians in its bid to continue charging for power that was not consumed, through analogue methods.

He added, “Power generation and distribution have been very erratic and efforts to put things right have failed in the past.

“Despite the declaration of emergency in the sector, regular power supply remains a mirage to Nigerians.

“Increasing electricity tariffs as have proposed is to make Nigerians pay more for a service they do not enjoy and further subject them to additional hardship.”

Balogun had initially sought for the suspension of the planned tariff regime but the Speaker, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal, intervened to guide the House.

Tambuwal suggested that rather than call for the suspension of the tariff regime, the House should first invite Nnaji and NERC to brief the Committee on Power on the reasons for the policy.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the United Action for Democracy, Mr. Ayodeji Ajayeoba, has described the planned removal of fuel subsidy and the increase in electricity tariff as “insensitive”.

PHCN AND HER STAFFS ARE FEEDING ON NIGERIANS BLOOD. NEARLY EVERY PHCN STAFF ARE HAVING HOUSES AND CARS WITHOUT DOING THE SERVICES THEY EXPLORE THE MASSES TO ENRICH THEMSELVES. THEY KNEW THAT IF PRE-PAID METRES ARE GIVING TO NIGERIANS, THEY CANNOT PAY THEIR SALARY TALKLESS OF BUYING A CAR. THERE WILL BE NO MORE CARRY OF LANDER TO EXPLORE US. wITHOUT LIGHT AND AT THE END OF THE MONTH SHE GIVE US ESTIMATED BILLS OF ABOUT N10,000.00 EVERY MONTH. IN SHORT NIGERIANS ARE IN BONDAGE UNDER PHCN. HOW CAN THIS BONDAGE BE BROKEN, THE GOVT. HAD PROMISE TO TRANSFER ELECTRICITY GENERATION TO THE PRIVATE AND SOME CORRUPT PEOPLE IN PHCN ARE FIGHTING AGAINST THE IDEA.

THE MASSES NEED TO GO ON STRIKE BECAUSE OF PHCH OPPRESSION.

They are only doing this bcos it is still govt owned. D same govt dat is blaming and busy fining d ntwk operators for not living up to standard. What if d services of d operators are worse than this and for them to now increase their tariff, what will people say? These people in govt are so insensitive, selfish, stupid, lacking
in ideas and wicked.
