Nigeria’s women U-17 national team, the Flamingoes, have been drawn in Group A against hosts Azerbaijan at the 2012 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup scheduled to hold from September 22 to October 13 in Baku and Lankaran.

The draws for the competition were held on Friday at the International Mugam Centre in Baku on Friday. The Flamingoes’ other group opponents are Colombia and Canada.

In Group B, France, USA, Korea DPR and Africa’s other representatives, Gambia will battle it out while Group C has Mexico, New Zealand, Brazil and Japan.

In Group D, Uruguay, China PR, Ghana — the third African representatives — and Germany will battle for the top two spots.

The draw ended a nervous wait for the 16 qualified nations as they discovered the identity of their rivals in the group phase. The opening match pits Azerbaijan against Colombia in Baku on September 22.

Nigeria play their first game same day against Canada before playing the hosts three days later. The Flamingoes play their final group game on September 29 against Colombia.

The top two teams from each group will advance to the quarter-finals.

The draw was presided over by Tatjana Haenni, FIFA’s Head of Women’s Competitions, and carried out by Dutch star Ronald de Boer, Azerbaijan coach Berti Vogts as well as two players from the Azerbaijan U-17 women’s team; Amina Heydarova and Aysun Aliyeva.

Nigeria crashed out in the group stage in the inaugural competition held in 2008 in New Zealand but reached the quarter-finals in 2010 in Trinidad and Tobago, only to lost out on penalties to Korea Republic.
