Edo Lawmaker Wants NAFDAC Officials To Be Proactive

A member representing Owan West in Edo House of Assembly, Mr Michael Ohio-Ezomo, has appealed to officials of NAFDAC to be more proactive in the discharge of their duties.

Ohio-Ezomo told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Benin that the health of the people was in serious danger due to the inability of the organisation to monitor the manufacturers of table/sachet water in the state.

He said recent investigation conducted by the House Committee on Energy and Water Resources on the potability of table/sachet water sold in the Benin metropolis was worrisome.

``It revealed that 98 per cent of the water sold to the people was not safe for human consumption.

``It was shocking to know that all the samples of the table and sachet water produced in the factories we recently visited, failed the test and one of the factories tested positive to bacteria.

``You need to see the environment in which this table/sachet water are produced, very dirty and in some areas you cannot differentiate the factories from a residential apartment.

``If officials of the organisation were doing their jobs well enough, all these would have been detected and those factories found wanting sealed up,’’ he said.

According to him, the investigation carried out is supposed to be the duty of the NAFDAC officials, but being a proactive committee, it  was decided to do the investigation as part of the oversight function.

Ohio-Ezomo urged the officials in the state to be alive to their responsibilities by making sure that factories producing sachet/table conformed to specifications.
